Defender and Challenger first to pick Barcelona team base locations
Team bases are allocated in accordance with the priority specified in the AC37 Protocol: Defender then Challenger of Record followed by the remaining Challengers
America’s Cup holders Emirates Team New Zealand and Challenger of Record Ineos Britannia have chosen their respective team base locations in Barcelona, Spain – the host city for AC37 which will take place in the autumn of 2024.
The team bases for all the competing teams will be located within the Port Vell area of the city close to the site of the America’s Cup village where tens of thousands of spectators are expected during the multi-week event.
Emirates Team New Zealand has selected the World Trade Centre site at the western end of the official America’s Cup race village.
Commenting on the team’s choice chief operating officer Kevin Shoebridge said:
“It’s very nice to have first option, but to be perfectly honest any of the base sites would have worked perfectly for us. The Port Authority have been first-class in helping us get to this point in such a tight timescale and their commitment to the America’s Cup is unparalleled.”
Meanwhile, the British Ineos Britannia syndicate has opted for the IMAX base adjacent to the Real Club Nàutico de Barcelona at the eastern end of the America’s Cup village.
Allocation of the team bases is in accordance with the priority specified in Article 51.2 of the Protocol – Defender first, then Challenger of Record, followed by the remaining Challengers in the order that their challenges were accepted.
Accordingly, America’s Cup Events (ACE) – the organisers of AC37 – is now in consultation with Alinghi Red Bull Racing (SUI), Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli (ITA) and American Magic (USA) – in that order – over their choice of base locations.
Work will begin on developing all the sites to the teams’ specifications as soon as the allocation is confirmed, with the expectation that teams will move in progressively between October 2022 and April 2023.
